Our neighborhood
Birchwood Neighborhood Association’s mission is to foster an informed and resilient community; engage neighbors; celebrate diversity; preserve our trees, green spaces, and gardens; and create a vibrant and safe place to live, work, and play.
Birchwood neighborhood is located in the northwestern quadrant of Bellingham, Washington, and has a rich history of growing food in victory gardens, historical coal mining, and being one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the city. The neighborhood has homes built on large lots, apartments and condominiums (primarily along Northwest Ave and W Maplewood), mature landscaping, open fields, and narrow streets, which lend a rural atmosphere to the neighborhood.
Other significant features of the neighborhood include the Bellingham Golf and Country Club, the Squalicum Creek greenbelt, Bellingham Technical College, Shuksan Middle School, and Birchwood Elementary School. Little Squalicum Park, located just outside the neighborhood boundary, provides salt water frontage on Bellingham Bay. The Bay to Baker Trail and greenway connects Little Squalicum, Birchwood, and Squalicum Creek Parks.
